The Ancient Wonders of the World
Everyone on the planet is surprised over the grandeur of the Seven Wonders of the New World. While this talks about anything from the prehistoric creation to the latest developments and constructions, there is something called as “Seven Wonders of the Ancient World” and “seven Wonders of the Medieval World”. Although the name seems self suggestive, what follows with leave you astonished.
Great Pyramid of Giza
Believed to be the tomb of the fourth dynasty Pharaoh Khufu, the Pyramid was the the talles man made structure for about 3800 years. Constructed with casing stones with a smooth outer surface, the construction techniques of the Great Pyramid is still a debate.
Hanging Gardens of Babylon
Built around 600BC by the Chaldean king Nebuchadnezzar II, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon are one of the oldest ancient wonders. The garden was a gift to Nebuchadnezzar II’s wife and contained exotic plants and animals. Astonishingly, the whole garden is cultivated above the ground level with the roots of the plants not creeping in the ground but down the elevated columns.
Statue of Zeus
A magnificent work by the Greek sculptor Phidias, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia was erected on c432BC. Contrary to other structures made up of ivory and bronze, this 40 feet marvel still stands rock solid at the Temple of Zeus.
Temple of Artemis
Also known as the Temple of Diana, this wonder of the ancient world was completed at around 550BC. The whole monument, except the roof, is completely made up of marble. Located at the ancient city of Ephesus, the Temple of Artemis in the modern world sits on the edge of the modern town of Selçuk. It is believed to house many sculptures by many renowned sculptors including Polyclitus, Pheidias, Cresilas, and Phradmon.
Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
A structure built for the Mausolus, the 45m tall Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was built by Greek architects Satyros and Pythis. The gracious monument was built overlooking the city. What lays now is the ruins of this spectacular monument screaming its glory and valor.
Colossus of Rhodes
Today it might seem to be nothing more than a reminder of the past, the Colossus of Rhodes was once a spectacular statue of the Greek god Helios. Standing 30m tall at the time when it was built, the statue was one of the tallest in the world prior to its destruction.
Lighthouse of Alexandria
Erected on the island of Pharos, the Lighthouse of Alexandria was constructed in 3rd century BC with its height estimated to be between 115 and 135m. In the year 1994, the remains of the building were discovered by the divers under Alexandria's Eastern Harbor.
